The Importance of Men’s Health

In June, we wear blue in honor of Men’s Health Month to encourage the men in our life to focus on their health and wellbeing. Because even though men are at higher risk for certain diseases, men don’t always make their health a top priority, which can often lead to poor long-term health. So how can men support their overall health? Check out the tips below!

Maintaining a Healthy Weight

Maintaining a healthy weight through diet and exercise can create one of the greatest impacts on men’s health. Being overweight puts men at increased risk for type 2 diabetes, various cancers, and heart disease, which is one of the leading causes of mortality in men. To better manage weight, include foods that are low in calories but high in fiber and nutrients like fruits, veggies, and whole grains. Aim to make half your plate fruits and veggies and choose whole grains whenever possible. In addition to increasing your intake of plant-based foods, aim for 150 minutes of moderate activity per week like brisk walking or 75 minutes of vigorous activity such as strength training.

Regular Check Ups

Taking care of your health isn’t just about what you can do at home, though. You should also make sure to follow through with your routine health care by scheduling regular screenings for diseases that men are at higher risk for like prostate cancer and colon cancer. And while you’re meeting with your doctor, ask if you can schedule a lipid panel to test your triglycerides and cholesterol, including your LDL and HDL cholesterol. Making sure your triglycerides and cholesterol are within a healthy range can help prevent future heart disease.

Stress Management

Take time to manage your stress. Not only can poor stress management contribute to the risk for heart disease, obesity, and high blood pressure, but it can also contribute to poor mental health by increasing the risk of depression. And unfortunately, statistics show that men do not seek help for mental health as often as women do. To better manage stress, take time for self-care by scheduling in time for exercise or a favorite hobby. And lastly, seek help from a professional when needed.
